Readings: Psalm 2; Exodus 24:12–18; 2 Corinthians 4:1–6

Living as Beloved Sons and Daughters

One of the deepest longings of every human heart is to know who we are.

We spend much of our lives trying to discover our identity through our accomplishments, our careers, our successes, our failures, and even the opinions of others.

Today’s readings remind us that our truest identity comes from God.

Psalm 2 contains these remarkable words:

“You are my Son; today I have begotten you.” (Psalm 2:7)

Originally, these words celebrated God’s covenant with Israel’s king. The New Testament later reveals their fullest meaning in Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God.

Yet through Christ, something wonderful happens.

Those who belong to Him are welcomed into God’s family. We become adopted sons and daughters, not because we have earned that privilege, but because of God’s grace.

The Father delights in His Son, and through Christ He invites us to share in that same loving relationship.

Exodus gives us a picture of what life in God’s presence can do.

Moses ascends Mount Sinai where the glory of the Lord settles upon the mountain. For six days he waits. Then God calls him into the cloud.

When Moses later returns to the people, his face shines because he has been in God’s presence.

He had not gone up the mountain to make himself radiant.

He simply spent time with God.

The light others saw was the reflection of the One he had been with.

Paul carries that same image into the New Testament.

He writes,

“For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

The same God who spoke light into creation now shines His light into human hearts.

The darkness is not overcome by our efforts.

It is overcome by God’s presence.

As I reflected on these readings, I realized they answer one of life’s most important questions.

Who am I?

I am not merely the sum of my successes or failures.

I am not defined by the labels others place upon me.

I am not even defined by my past.

In Christ, I am a beloved child of God.

The more time I spend in God’s presence, the more that identity begins to shape my life.

Like Moses, I may not even realize the change taking place within me.

Others may notice the light before I do.

Paul reminds us that this light is not our own.

It is the light of Christ shining through ordinary people whose hearts have been transformed by grace.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest invitations of the Christian life.

God does not simply call us to believe certain truths.

He calls us to live as beloved sons and daughters, allowing His love to shine through us into a world that often walks in darkness.

Prayer

Loving Father, thank You for calling me Your beloved child through Jesus Christ. Help me to find my identity not in what I accomplish, but in Your unfailing love. Draw me into Your presence as You drew Moses onto the mountain. Shine the light of Christ into my heart until it overflows into the lives of others. When I forget who I am, remind me that I belong to You. May others see not my glory, but Yours reflected in my life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
